I'm one of those "overly anxious" people. I don't wear a kilt pin as I do not want it to get snagged on something and tear a hole in my apron. But, I love accessories, and a rare earth magnet backed pin is starting to sound like the best of both worlds!

I always wear a kilt pin. I definitely think it is an important part of traditional highlandwear even though it serves no real practical purpose.

What are you doing that might cause the pin to get snagged on something? I've seldom had a problem with this happening.

First I remove the pin from the back of the item and then sand it smooth. Next, I epoxy a stainless steel washer on the back. The rare earth magnet goes under the apron in it's holder. Pictures forthcoming.

I wear a pin on all my kilts. It add a bit of sparkle. Its important to remember that the kilt pin is a modesty device. If you do not need it an don't have one, don't worry about it. If the pin has affiliation value use it. There are fewer rules to all this than you may have been lead to believe. At least that is what my European Celt friends tell me.
I tried the magnet trick also. It works almost all the time. It doesn't work when the magnets decides the the car door is a better point of contact.
