Feather Hackles

I noted on the Glengarry hats site that they sell feather hackles to wear behind your badge. I thought only feathers worn were by Chief's or other high ranking folks.

I don't think the kilt Police will hunt you down if you wear one. Wear what you like as long as it makes you happy and doesn't hurt anyone .

Hackles are noth the same as feathers denoting an armiger or a chief. Hackles are traditionally worn my soldiers, especially bandsmen, as part of a uniform.

These are hackles, which are a bunch of small feathers:



'Feathers' are long (~12") and are worn 1, 2, or three behind the cap badge.

Todd, I seem to recall that one of those colors has a pretty strong association to one of the regiments (maybe the red to the Black Watch?) Please correct me if I'm wrong on that.

As a general rule civilians do not wear hackles. It was always said, that if a black hackle was worn then there was a long standing and unsettled feud,of a serious kind, was going on with some one.

I seem to recall that "The Cameronians" wore a black hackle, perhaps I am wrong. I also remember one Commando unit wore a black hackle, they also had a bit of an issue with Mr Hitler at the time!

I wear some short, 1-2 inch max, pheasant (roadkill) feathers behind my cap badge, just to set it off, on my Glengarry. I love how you can get anything from shimmering green through to umber/orange in the colours.

As others have said, eagle feathers, in particular, are for the use of chiefs etc and military hackles should be kept for just those enlisted folks. But, personally, I see no wrong in the use of other, smaller, feathers, usually taken from a bird's belly rather its wings.

Now, when I'm on the move with the Tartan Army, that's quite another story and out come the pheasant wing feathers with abandon!
