Well, it seems like we've hit a chord, chaps!

    SteveB

I think I'll go for a homemade attempt at first. I have plenty of bits 'n' bobs lying around that just need a few yards of cloth to which to attach themselves!

Hey, have a night out in Seattle and you'll be in Abney Park's home town!

I think your steam train hobby fits right into the world of steampunk. You'd probably be seen as some sort of Grand Master or somesuch! All you need now is a steampunk kilt to go along with it!

    dowofbuchanan

I think you could be right about the type of kilt. The band members wear various ones on their You Tube videos, sometimes more trad than others.

    English Bloke

Glad you liked the link! I think steampunk has the potential to move things on from 21st Century kilts which might begin to be seen as sooo turn of the century (I'm joking, folks)!

Here's a link to a video that goes some way to explain the aesthetic behind steampunk:

Steampunk is new to me. But thanks for the link/info. I love that kilt with the gear design. Very modern, yet retro.

goggles and rolled up shirt sleeves- essential steampunk. the key is to display an air of industry and motivation.

The guy that made that keyboard, Jake Von Slatt, is highlighted in this video interview:

    http://steampunk.ning.com/video/make-steampunk-edition

I think if you apply steampunk principles to kilting you end up with things like the kilt in my opening post. I like the way he uses things, recycling and such. One of the main aesthetics is the notion, though, of making things well, making them to last, something we seem to have lost in our world of built-in obsolescence. Mind, kilts are generally made to last as a rule, and I'm sure we all appreciate that!

Maybe that's why it all resonates so well?

Not exactly kilted - but a trend for the Steampunk - Neo-Edwardian crowd are tweed rides...

Well, one could have a tweed kilt made up to join them, wot wot! I say, dashed elegant, my man!

I must admit, for all I love the kilt in my OP, it's the incoporation of leather and metal, especially brass, into a kilt that grabs me. The whole Neo-Victorian clothing thing is fascinating, but trad clothing from that era doesn't float my boat, though it's beautiful to look at. The same goes for trad kilted attire, nice in photos, but not really my scene.

That's the thing with kilting, it has a history AND a future in my book. In fact, the whole steampunk thing says it's okay to mix and match eras. Where you step in is up to you, which is really the thrust behind this thread if 'twere known!!
