Lot's of things really. Most everything invented since 1930. Modern computers are possible due to the advances made in quantum physics. Heck, digital cameras can be traced back to an Einstein paper in 1905.

I like the kilt, but it doesn't seem like steampunk. At least not from what I saw today. I'd think it would be more like the Victorian kilts. Or some advancement on them, like 21st century kilts.

I think kilts could be easily worked in, after all bomber hats aren't so victorian either. To me steampunk is a creative melding of DIY, natural, mechanical and historical.

Sorry that I have been off X-Marks for so long, I actually had a life there for a few months, it went away, I'm back now. I also am pushing 50 now and over the say, last two years, discovered the joy that is Steampunk.

The Steamy kilt on the first page: perfect! I really dislike the modern utilikilts because without a sporran it does not look like a kilt to me, but if you add the Steampunk bells and whistles it looks like a "Steampunk Kilt."

As to the gears added to the apron, that tells anyone that it is Steampunk not just punk. Just as safety pins tell you that the person in rags and a kilt is a Punk Rocker not a fashion victim.

The whole kilt is so 19th Century you could just wear it straight as Steampunk wear.

I REALLY like that kilt. I like it a lot.

...and as a total aside, for those who would consider making such a thing...that is for all intents and purposes a narrow-apron X-Kilt with a LOT of extra attachments and things on it. But the basic structure, is narrow-apron box-pleat....exactly what an X-Kilt is.

My idea for the X-Kilt was a simple kilt with no gew-gaws, and even the pockets were an afterthought. That seamstress has taken the idea and run with it. What makes that kilt outrageous is all the extra stuff she's done to it....HOURS and HOURS of work. The front closure buttons are absolutely killer.

I like that a LOT.

The x-kilt would be the way to make the base for your own steampunk kilt. My first attempt at making a kilt was with several yards of 18 oz black denim that was in the clearance bin at a local fabric shop. After several cleanings the pleats started to curl, so I sewed on assorted pieces of steel brackets to straighten them out. I then threw a few "D" rings to hang stuff from at various places, then things got a little out of hand as more hardware went on display. I hope to convince my spouse to take a picture of it the next time we are out and I have it on. It gets a lot of attention at concerts and parties.

There certainly is a lot of interest in this by the 1,200+ views of this thread.
