Kilt belt, yes/no?

Ok, how necessary is it to wear a belt whiltst kilted? As my kilt fits amazingly, I dont need a belt to keep it up, however am I violating some sacred unsaid rule by not wearing one? Also, if it is 'necessary', can anyone point me in the direction of a relativly inexpensive one? (Im a poor college kid)

Lowes carries a 2" wide leather belt for about less than $20. Not a kilt belt, but would work for a casual look.

The belt and sporran really distinguish the kilt from a pleated skirt in my opinion. You don't have to follow any of the rules if you don't want to, but they are good guidelines for not appearing silly. If you wear the kilt properly, you'll find very few people will give you any grief about it because you look good in it. As far as a cheap belt, Stillwater kilts is a good spot, and you're close to them in Minnesota. Also, the popular 2" belts with the large belt buckles that you find in most fashionable, college-age stores will suffice. Or, if you wear your kilt with a vest, you wouldn't be able to see your belt or need it.

I agree the kilt belt on SWK are great. I have one in black embossed belts
($34)and it is better than I expected, I have sent a few other friends there to pick up a belt. You may or may not like the buckle but the belt is great. You can always replace the buckle later if you like. Also, the shipping from SWK is great, it will be at your door in no time at all.
Panach has posted some photos of one of SWK betls in brown that look great. Perhaps he could pass on his opinion.

You do not need to wear a belt with your kilt, as you say it stays up fine. I normally do wear one simply to use as a visual break between the kilt and the rest of the outfit, however it really is an unnecessary accessory. I should add here that if you are wearing a waistcoat then do not wear a belt. Another thing, I started making my own belts and sporran straps as I did not find anything out there that worked for a casual setting at a price I was happy with, Tandy Leather can be a great place to go if you don't mind putting them together yourself.

I do like the look of the belt, in a more casual setting a little less ostentatious buckle perhaps, maybe the old style circular buckle, if you can find one.

I often go casual kitled. I really like the ring belt. I think they go well with the kilt in a casual look. I have seen others use narrow ring belts as sporran belts.

Although my kilt has belt loops, I rarely use them for the belt. My kilt stays up just fine without any extra support.

The reason I wear a belt is that it's a great excuse to have another piece of jewelry on, in the form of a fancy waist plate.
