Our esteemed Brother Matt N. is correct, in that the Harris tweeds I mentioned earlier, usually equate to about 30" wide, give or take.

the source I mentioned, who sells her work on eBay, lists her fabric as being 71/73 cm wide, which, If I am any good at math, (not......) that comes out to about 28" +-.

would work for a box-pleat job.

    http://shop.ebay.com/isleoflewistwee...&_trksid=p4340

Is the link. She has 31 different weaves listed at present, all four yard lengths and listed at or about $63 US.

Have seen some very nice tweed kilts among the lot of you who have posted.

    Fide et Fortitudine, aye!

Thanks! I've been doing some searching around on ebay for fabric as well and have found some options/ideas over on the UK ebay site but the shipping is the killer... which makes me want a much better deal (of course!) to offset the shipping charges.

She does have some nice weaves though - something to consider - thanks for her link!

Nope. So long as the pleats face front in each direction, as in Matt's kilt, it is a Kingussie style. Were they to face rearward, and have no central box pleat, that would be a reverse Kingussie.

To avoid that the rest of the outfit must say unambiguously that this is a kilt.

The problem is that women's tweed skirts can be remarkably like a tweed kilt in size, shape, color, material and wear that the distinction between the two is fuzzy at best. That is by design as women's clothiers look to men's suits and men's kilts for inspiration. For example schoolgirl outfits today mimic schoolboy outfits of yesteryear.
Well, that's one man's opinion. I frequently wear tweed kilts for daywear and I have never once had anyone suggest that they look feminine. (Maybe the fact that I'm 6'3" with a full beard tips them off that this is a man's garment).

You yourself have said that many women's fashion designers look to men's suits and men's kilts as inspiration. Well, that's not really our problem; in this case it is them copying us, not the other way around.

When I wear tweed my inspiration is not modern ladies' fashion, but rather authentic Highland fashion of a bygone era.

Actually, 'reversed' Kingussie-pleated kilts can have a central box pleat. I prefer to make them that way.
