I like cigars. But most of my cigars take about 1.5 hours to smoke. Great when I'm on an extended walk with the dogs or just sitting about.

Quite often, all I want to do is go out on the patio for about 20 minutes and relax a bit. So I've toyed with the idea of getting a pipe. That way one or two bowls of tobacco will do the trick( I'm assuming that's about how long a bowl of tobacco will last )

I'm soliciting suggestions for types of pipes and tobacco.

I'm a fan of cigars as well but like you said you have to have some time set aside to be able to smoke it all. Relighting just isn't an option so if you don't have much time you have to smoke a robusto. The other thing that turned me onto pipes is once you purchase a good pipe, the tobacco is fairly inexpensive compared to that of a hand rolled cigar and I have had many more people come up to me complimenting me on the smell of my pipe than they have the smell of my cigar.

I smoke my pipe daily on my commute home from work. The drive takes about 30 minutes and I can smoke about 2 bowls during that time. It works pretty well.

As far as tobacco is concerned, I will give you a few of my favorites. If you are looking for a aromatic tobacco, one that has a good flavor and aroma as well try Sunset Breeze made by Peterson tobacco. This one will get a lot of compliments from those around you.

Personally I'm not much into flavored tobaccos so If you are looking for a tobacco that smokes more like a cigar, try an English blend. One of my favorites is Frog Morton Across the Pond by McClelland tobacco. This is made with a blend of Virginias and Latakia tobacco. It is a good smoke.

Both of these are pretty common and should be easy to find at a local smoke shop. When looking for a pipe just make sure you are buying a pipe made of Briar. Some pipe makers I suggest are Savinelli or Peterson. Both are good pipes that will last you many years and they are reasonably priced.

Hi Shawn,
Thanks for the advice. I have some questions now.
My Father-In-Law smoked a pipe. He put orange peel in his tobacco bin to help keep it fresh. Any truth to that?
He also used a simple corncob style pipe for daily use, but on the weekend he had to use his "Sherlock Holmes" pipe. Shallow bowl versus deep bowl is the only difference I could detect. Any thoughts on that?
How do you pack a pipe bowl? Do you pack it down tight, loose? Is it a personal preference? I suspect packing it down tight would make it smoke more like a cigar.
One last thing, how much does a decent pipe cost? I don't want a Geo and don't see the need for a Ferrari !
