Is the definition of "formal" different in your part France? I have been to formal dinners in parts of France, where all the men wore black (bow) ties. Or, have times changed? I am asking just in case we get invited to dinner in Normandy again, I would hate to upset my hosts!

I was once invited to a formal ball here in the states. Boy did I feel silly having shown up in black tie.

Same!
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Ditto. I was invited to a "formal wedding and reception". I showed up in black tie and was the only one outside of the wedding party dressed in such a way.
