    With regard to an exposed kneecap in cold weather I remember reading this (can't remember where) ' Don't worry about being cold in a kilt, the only part of the leg exposed to cold weather is the bony structure of the knee, which doesn't feel the cold'

    Since writing my original post I've been 'experimenting' in my kilts and one thing I do find is that the kilt does seem to 'swing' (or 'swish') better in the longer length (centre of the kneecap). At the end of the day it's a matter of choice. Just make sure that your kilt doesn't hang below the centre of the knee (watch out - it's those kilt polis again ! ith
