It was semi formal dinner ! In France, I think that black tie is rather exceptional !

I think Rollo meant "bow tie is rather exceptional." ...black or white ! No one even makes the difference between the two types of events !

But I may add that even a dressy look is rather exceptional. Now a day, I'm often the only one wearing a tie at weddings or funerals.

Last time, there was myself and a 78 years old gentleman. His wife came up to congratulate me... for wearing a simple tie. No more ties on television. Even our politics are putting it aside.

Dressing formalities seem to be well alive in anglo-saxon countries. In France people will rather look at your watch to make sure it's an expensive one ...

    Rollo,

    A very handsome outfit

Personally I think kilt jackets look best unbuttoned though

    Cheers

Ah ! Another cultural thing here Jamie.

In France, a gentleman will button up his jacket as soon as he stands up.

But he will leave the last button of his waiscoat undone and wear buckled shoes for day wear.

Add to this that all evening dinners are practically never really formal (classy at the most) and you will have a very confusing situation I must admit.

    C'est la vie ! ...à la française.
