Even as you read, Bournemouth is being provided with an artificial reef to create a surfing beach - they get 'natural' surf only when the wind is in the right direction.
The large tubes filled with sand will be positioned so as to create surfing waves in most conditions of wind and tide, according to local government sources.
The town hopes to cream off the weekend surfers, tempting them with shorter drive times than the traditional spots in the West Country.
