Newcastle Brown Ale (Move)
Newcastle brown ale will no longer be brewed on Tyneside.
Manufacture of the famous Gordie brand will switch to Tadcaster North Yorkshire.
lt wants to close the Federation Brewery, Dunston, Gateshead, with the loss of 63 jobs by the middle of next year, because of falling beer sales in the UK.
The brand owners won Protected Geographical lndication ststus from the EU, meaning Newcastle Brown Ale had to be brewed in the city, but that lapsed with the shift a couple of miles across the River Tyne to Gateshead, in 2005.
Now production will move even further away- nearly 90 miles down the A1- to the same brewery where John Smiths is produced.
The brand continued to be popular abroard, perticularly in the US.
Paul Hoffma, S&N operations director said " Clearly this is a sad day, but thr proposal to close Dunston is not a decision we have taken lightly.
"falling beer sales have created general over capacity in the UK brewing sector & rising input costs have put unprecedented pressure on our business".

This is a bad time for people to be losing jobs. That said, it doesn't do anyone any good for the whole ship to sink either.
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

I quite like the ale - but I am disappointed it is losing it's local roots right in the North of modern England.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Sad, but very true.

Newcastle is one of my favorite "mainstream" brews, if you can call it that. It is certainly better than the stuff that gets labeled "mainstream" here in the U.S.
I hope all of those who are affected by this move find themselves on the upside of life quickly!

I dislike when brewerys move or sell out. There is a lot of history in beer. And all the owners think about is money. When Rolling Rock remodeled their place in Pa and then sold out to Bud. Bud then fired everyone and moved production out of PA. And then when Bud sold out. But then, who drinks bud anyway. Oooh, rant over.
I at dinner at a Well known Bar-be-cue outlet the other day and Newcastle ale was the only import on the menu. I was surprised.

While I'm no fan of Budweiser, the hit St. Louis took as a community when InBev bought them last year was heart-breaking to see. The Busch family and its brewery was an institution in the Mound City, and harkened back to its German heritage when there were many breweries there to serve the German immigrant population.

Growing up in Detroit area, Stroh's was the home town brew. Everyear in Feb. they would brew a batch of bock and I always looked forward to it. But, they sold out, and moved out. Don't hardly see it in stores anymore.
