Well about the topic of large guys in the Scottish regiments:
- I recently bought an ex-army No2 Dress jacket with 48 inch chest, 42 inch waist, and made for a person 6 foot 4 inches tall. That's me to a "T" right now!!
-Back around 1800 the Black Watch had a private described as a "giant". I have a book that talks about him somewhere but I can't find it at the moment.
-Back in the 1960's there was a huge Pipe Major of the Black Watch named Anderson IIRC. I think they called him "The Big Ugg". Here he is:

Here's the jacket style seen over and over again from the 1860's up through the 1930's. I have literally dozens of old photos of pipers and non-pipers wearing this same style. No one seems to make it any more. An old Highland Dress catalogue mentions a "Celtic Jacket" and I'm wondering if that is what they called this style:
