Balmorals and Contemporary kilts

So i was getting dressed to go out this afternoon. No big plans just to the drug store and back. I had on my Blk UK Mocker, and a nice plaid shirt. Then i thought mmmm its a little nasty out, chilly and rainy, I should have a hat on. So i grabbed my Balmoral and stopped for a glance in the looking glass. Not bad, i chanced a second glance, errrr maybe. In the end i went with out any headgear, and thought who shall i ask about this.. I know!!! i know a place that ppl are just waiting to debate this issue. XMTS! thats where i will go and that is where i am , and let the debate Begin!!!

It can be worn with blue jeans, sweat pants, or a Utilikilt.

Ask yourself if it is OK to wear a cowboy hat with other clothes than blue jeans and boots?

I bet most of us would say sure.

Oh i agree that it is just a hat. You have a good point with the cowboy hat reference. I guess when i comes down to it, Its all am matter of Style.

I don't think I could stand it if you wore a cowboy hat with your kilt.

The balmoral makes good sense, especially with a kilt. (I often wear one with jeans.) In cold or nasty weather, it only makes sense to wear a hat.

Kilted Rogue, I wear my Balmoral even when I'm not kilted up for the simple reason that:
1) I've had it kicking around for awhile and it's developed some nice character.
2) I'm follicly challenged on the top deck, and
3) It's wool, it's warm and repels water like a duck.

That reminds me; it's snowing outside so I ought to haul it out and wear it to work tomorrow.

Ah, but the question is not can I, so much as should I? Personally, I don't wear hats (unless it's brutal cold out, and then I wear my heavy wool 17th century bonnet- talk about toasty!) so I don't really have an answer- just more questions! ith:

I posted this on another thread, that I couldn't help but noticing at a large recent Games all the various things people wear with Ukilts.

There were guys wearing a complete traditional Highland Day Dress outfit (one guy had the tweed kilt jacket, Lovat balmoral, Lovat hose, ghillies, Day sporran) but with a Ukilt substituted for a traditional kilt. It looked OK to my eye, though usually any sort of mixing of various modes of dress strikes my eye as "wrong".

Then there were guys just wearing their ordinary everyday dress such as baseball cap, T shirt, trainers/sneakers/tennis shoes, etc but with a Ukilt substitued for bluejeans. Once again this looked OK to my eye, whereas a traditional kilt somehow would not.

What did strike my eye as "wrong" was a person wearing a full Renaissance costume but with a Ukilt. Now I'm not an expert on Elizabethan clothing but I'm pretty sure that Ukilts didn't exist in the 15th century.
