I think the easy answer is to start your own society and allow and include all those that they exclude. They have no more title to the use of the Arms and Clan Crest Badge and Tartans than you do.

Spread the word here (and in other places); get a small working committee; plan to attend as many highland events in 2010 as is humanly possible (if you can't make it there yourself, get someone to stick a sign on a wall/on the ground/anywhere with phone or better email).

Within 5 years (probably only 3), your society will be bigger and better than theirs.

There already is a Clan Buchanan Society in the United States; no need to re-invent the wheel:

However, in defence of the Buchanan Society, which is the oldest (founded in 1725) clan society around, as a private organisation, they were well within their rights to admit and deny whomever they choose as members. It should also be pointed out that they were started as a charitable relief society, so obviously they would want to verify the legitimacy of potential members who might receive their aid.

    Regards,

    Todd

Thanks for the info Todd. I was not aware of the International Society. I've just looked them up - they sound very chatty and friendly. I think that would be Christopher's best bet.

I am quite sure that the Buchanan Society would want to be more inclusive (especially in these financially restricted times), but there is probably an old charter preventing them from doing so.

    Regards

    Chas
