How does an Argyll jacket look?
Let me be a bit more specific... I'm considering getting one of the gray Argyll jackets that Paul is selling... My wife asked a good question that I couldn't seem to answer, even when searching through the archives.
Before my wife allows me to buy it, she wants to know "how the jacket hangs..." Does someone have a picture of themselves wearing an Argyll jacket, without a waistcoat, that's buttoned up (preferably with arms at the side)? (Personally, I don't button my jackets up, but I'm just passing along the request here)...
Any piccies would be fantastic!
Cheers,
Jim

Well, not that great a picture, not buttoned, but the closest I have to your request.
Order of the Dandelion, The Houston Area Kilt Society, Bald Rabble in Kilts, Kilted Texas Rabble Rousers, The Flatcap Confederation, Kilted Playtron Group.

I think you'll find that it's the style to not button the jacket. To me it gives the impression you see when one wears a shirt fully buttoned but without a tie.

"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

I always order the waistcoat with the Argyll and generally wear the two together, as the look better suits my height, long torso, and gut while hiding my oft used suspenders. I also have to have mine custom made in either long or extra long sizes, becasue of my long torso and gorilla arms. But if you go to my personal page here on xmarks (just click on my name in any post) and go through my albums you should see several pictures of me in Black Barathea, Grey Tweed, and Green Lovat tweed argylls.

Going back and looking through my on line photo album for pictures of me in an Argyle jacket, I seem to be wearing a waistcoat in almost all of them. But I did find these two...

I don't think I've ever worn an Argyle buttoned....

You'll actually find that many Argyll jackets while they've got "buttons" in the front... dont actually have button holes on the other side. The Argyll jacket is not designed to be worn buttoned up. The same is true of several other kilt jacket styles, including regimental doublets, sheriffimur doublets, etc.

Of the five Argyll jackets I have, only two have matching waistcoats. I have to admit I quite like the look of the two items worn together, but I do not care for the 'constriction' of the waistcoat and so I seldom wear one. Of course, it all depends upon the formality of the day or event - to my mind the wearing of a waistcoat makes the outfit slightly more formal than wearing the jacket on its own.
Here are two photos of one of my Argylls, the first with the waistcoat.....

....... and this one without it:

Personally, I prefer the more relaxed look of the jacket on its own.
With regard to the use of the buttons: I never button-up my Argylls, Balmorals or Crail, and in all the years I was a suited businessman, the only jacket I think I ever buttoned was when it was in the double-breasted style.
Take care,
Ham.

I'm afraid I would have to send the jacket back from whence it came if there were not "working" buttonholes, regardless of whether I do up the jacket or not!
Now, false buttonholes on evening doublets are another matter.
