Boy I hope you have a support group to help you as a former kiltmaker. Is there a chapter of kiltmakers anonymous there?
I do have to admit the boat looks really interesting.

Yes are there X-kilt makers or just recovering kilt makers. Be careful of getting to close to a bolt of 100% virgin wool in a discount bin. Passing by the local yard goods establishment and see the new line of como cloth on display.

I know whereof Alan speaks... life happens in cycles.

Kiltmaking (and kiltwearing) is great in its cycle, and it may cycle back again later. I have a feeling we'll not be cutting Alan loose in his dory to drift forever.

Regarding the boat:
Are you building one just like the one in the picture, repairing it (if it needs it), or rowing it around the world?

I'm not building that exact boat, but rather something very much like it, of my own design. I've made the first model, figured out the problems (there was a big one) and am starting on model #2.

I've been somewhat enraptured with Ian Oughtreds designs for quite a while, it doesn't hurt that he's Scottish!

However, I also quite like the classic Maine Peapod, which is also a double-ender. I've had the itch to design and build my own boat for years and years. I thought about designing and building a mini 6.5..

...but that is years of work and thousands upon thousands of dollars, probably to produce a boat that is not competetive.

so I thought that I would bite off a project that I knew I actually would complete. Thus, the "Herron Island 15 1/2" due to start construction, oh in probably about 3 months!
