Well... my sgian has been used for FAR too many simple chores to not be thought of. Actually, it's usually in my pocket even when wearing pants...

Seems that a leather sheath is the key to having a "smooth draw". Having the opening of the sheath actually near the top of the hose helps...

and to at least TRY to stay with the thread, how many of you have a sgian that has an edge that makes it worth drawing/unsheathing/fumbling out of one's sock?
I was actually surprised at the edge on mine when I got it. I obviously don't intend to shave with it or skin a deer, but it's got enough of an edge to be used for rudimentary 'pocket knife' chores.

And I really don't see the point in carrying a sgian dubh if it has no edge at all. Then it's just a prop for a costume.

Let us be sure to tread lightly on the weapons topic here lads lest we cross the line into forbidden territory.
Pardon my ignorance of board etiquette/rules, but what exactly is forbidden territory with respect to weapons?

That's all I was looking for when I asked about edged sgians. I've found it difficult to tell online which products are dull and which are edged. I'd like my new sgian to be a useful tool, taking the place of my pocket knife when I'm kilted.

The knife I carry is a small one, very thin, and shaving sharp. In a sheath that is deep enough (and a pouch style) so that if the end of the handle is exposed from the hose top, the sheath is inside. It "can be" drawn without pulling the sheath out if the garter tie is tight enough, as that will hold the sheath in, that said, it is far safer to pull sheath and all.

I am never without a sharp knife in reach, no matter how I am dressed. I guess making them for twenty years has warped my perspective a bit.

Is this a claim that you weren't warped before you started making knives?

If true, you'd be a statistical anomaly... :P

There was a mini discussion regarding concealed carry. Discussion of sgians are fine, discussion of hand guns are not fine and will get this thread shut down.

I just use a thumb or forefinger against the sheath, and pull with my other fingers. The sheath stays in place, and the sgian pulls out smoothly.

    Well, all of 'em, actually.
Otherwise, it would be like half a pair of pliers ... or a crescent wrench that won't stay tightened ... or a hammer with a wobbly head ...
