Just to nitpick a little - the official Scout motto is "Be Prepared" - no 'always' to it. (It's the same for every member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement - WOSM.)

Kids that age are curious and have little sense of propriety. They'll ask just anbout any kind of question that comes to mind. Many I have known have had a great deal of modesty, though (especially boys).

That's hilarious! As a father of a 13 year old girl, I can relate.

As a rule, when I get asked that question the questioner is in some place like the Canadian Legion, about 4 or 5 times that age, and very very drunk. Never thought to ask THEM if THEY were wearing underpants but that seems like a good comeback- thanks for the indirect suggestion!

Imponderable issue: Why is it always a really cold and windy day when they ask the U P question?

Now that might have gotten you thrown out. It's amazing how kids will answer very honestly, almost too honestly at times.

Because you have a preponderance of cold and windy days?

Wow, it's really amazing that a kid would come up with the question in the first place. I might have remained speechless in confusion. I applaud your presence of mind.

it would seem that hip-huggers vs hi-rise kilt makes
a demure revelation of undies unequal
Thus we of the kilt must needs to decide
on a method to show the pre-pubescent who
contrary to manners and parental advice
do ask us and ask us "what wears thou man, BENEATH?"
I suggest to my peers, if such be bespoke, that for events
and exchanges where such we adorn
that we don surfer baggies so none may be cowed
when we are our tartans up flipped are allowed
