I like the outfit, and although I waivered on the boots, I'll give it to him since he wasn't kicked out of the palace. If his tartan had been a loud one, then it may have been too much.

Anybody else think he might have made the kilt an inch shorter?

I think this gentleman is probably making the same mistake many do (even on this forum)... He is wearing it too low at the waist.

Smashing look. Although I agree with the majority here that the boots could have been better served with a simpler pair of black or even better brown dress shoes. I like the sporran--quirky like his hair and personality.

I did wonder when that question was going to be posed and I am surprised it took 22 posts before it was asked.

At least an inch shorte if not more!

I hate to be the lone nay-sayer, but I do not care for that outfit. It is impeccably tailored, which dulls some of the tartan overkill, but I do not really know that it's a matter of pride in his tartan. After the gold lame trick, I'm not sure he wasn't just trying to show out!

But, on the other hand, it's not really offensive, just overdone. Looks like an actress on the red carpet.

    Jacket style?

Please pardon my ignorance, but what sort of jacket is he wearing? It appears to be almost a sport-coat in it's tailoring, but perhaps a little shorter, and not cut away at the sporran as would be a traditional argyle.

As has been said, it looks good........but the boots....

    All the best,
    David

I love the outfit. As a member of the Clan Cumming Society USA who wears that very same tartan, I am glad to see the tartan... and so much of it! The boots were an unfortunate choice, but we've discussed these actor types and their kilted choices before in other threads. Anyway, good to see the tartan I wear done well. I'm a fan of the all tartan outfits.

Mr. Cumming's jacket, make that SIR ALAN'S

KS, if you start looking at some of the commercial kilt sites in the UK, you may find some "modern" kilt jackets, based loosely on the argyle/ argyll, but leaning towards a slightly different, slimmer shape, with less of a cutaway at the bottom and narrower lapels. They also seem to reflect the tendency by younger guys to wear the kilt lower, where the traditional Argyll emphasizes the boxiness of a high waisted kilt and a broad chest. You will note that Mr C ( ooops, SIR A) also has a three button front on his jacket. Between his own slender physique and the long -n- lean styling of his ensemble, it is not surprising that his tailor chose to minimize the curve of the jacket hem. Having said all of that, I think you can call it an Argyll or Crail, just a trim one.

I have to say, this is a fair improvement.

Not quite, Rex. That play was last year (it was so last year). I had a photo of him marching this past spring, when he was Grand Marshall of the Tartan Day parade here in NYC. (how to do a link??)

Btw, is this the same as being knighted?
