It's not common, but it's done and, as long as the buttons aren't too big (as can be the case with surplus military buttons) it is not an unpleasing effect. Personally, unless I had an iron-clad reason to wear "regimental" or "general service" buttons on a civilian coatee, I would advise against it. Crested, monogrammed, or designer buttons would be another matter altogether.
