I'm with Jock on this one!

I don't put ice in my whisky, and I'm certainly not going to put rocks, stones, or any other foreign substance in it, either.

Whisky doesn't need to be cold! What's with the obsession with cold drinks?

Looks like they were looking for some way to put the little odds and ends cut off of the soapstone countertops and paving blocks to use. This is what they came up with. Those Vermont Yankees hate to throw anything away. Almost as bad as Scots.

It still boggles the mind. Since the main purpose of ice in a cocktail is not make it cold. Besides, stone is not the best medium for a heat sink (perhaps they're ceramic anyways?) For that matter, how are they chilled? In a freezer? Why not, then, just keep the whisky in the freezer? How bad would freezer whisky taste!

I see now that the stones are not sold as a joke, which is how I would use them. But their true purpose is not for me.

But, Eagle, what will they do with the little pieces left over after this? Make breakfast cereal? French fry seasoning? Bean bags?

The stones are indeed a real product often touted in whisky collectors mags, etc. . They do not dissolve or in any way alter the taste of the whisky except by making it cooler by a few degrees. They are washable and reusable. They are not a gag.

Soneone once told me that only two things should ever touch fine whisky---a glass and my lips. Works for me. Straight, neat, no ice no water, no chaser---let it linger in my mouth for half an hour after the last sup. I am salivating now just thinking about it.
