    My strategy

When confronted with people like that, which is fortunately a very infrequent occurrence, I will tell them that my favorite quote from George Orwell is that "freedom is the right to say NO!" and that it includes saying no to them.

This email is obviously from a person who can't see the forest for the trees. Kilt on my brother!

And for godsakes don't let her know about the haggis hunt!

    My friend Raphael is cool

My friend Raphael wears kilts because he thinks they are cool

The kilts my friend Raphael wears are cool because he wears them and knows they are cool, and therefore they are

    End of story

    Cheers

People like that make me sick. Then again I was taught to stay away from people who would ruffle your feathers.

I had no idea that older folk had done things so well that there is nothing left for the present younger generation to shake its fist at.

The right to wear a kilt is rather scraping the bottom of the barrel as a cause for action.

Bit late too - as far as I know it hasn't been legislated against for a long time.

Thank goodness for the internet and emails, even if they do upset people from time to time - otherwise people with time on their hands could be getting up to some real mischief!!

As a Scot I can trace my ancestors back to 1790 but my name appears to be French. I have worn the kilt since I was about 5 or 6. I can claim family "rights" to the McKinnon clan via my mother's line and am "entitled" to wear their tartan however as the thread states anyone can wear a kilt they just cannot claim rights to the tartan they wear. It used to be a "family" thing. I have Campbell's of Argyle in my bloodline and choose to wear both the modern and ancient tartans of theirs. The derivation of name rights has long since gone by the wayside with the introduction of corporate tartans town and county tartans. Check out this web site to see the variety of non Scottish tartans now registered. http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/index.aspx
Who needs to promote the kilt? it is recognised and worn world wide and probably by more non Scots than Scots.

You must fight for your rights. The right to do what you want, where you want and why. Do not be used by this person. Wear the kilt because you want to. Not because someone wants to start a cause.

If she ever tries that again, tell her that just by going out on kilt night and relaxing with friends creates awareness about cultural diversity. She has her methods, you have yours.

The greatest thing is that you're not trying to live up to her expectations.

Now kilt up and get out there and have fun.
