In all seriousness, the bad thing about the H1N1 virus is that it overwhelms the system very quickly. We have had several early 30s, apparently healthy people die from this bug. If your symptoms are lasting more than 48 hours with a high fever, please seek medical help asap.

Still alive - so far temperature maxed out at 100.5, and has now dropped to under 99.

If there are a disproportionate number of deaths in youngsters, then I suspect that there must have been a virus around shortly before they were born which is providing partial immunity to those who had it.

I'm still feeling really ill, but bearing up with fortitude - and the rum help.

Unfortunately I cannot drink whiskey - nor whisky - for pleasure - well - OK I can drink malts, but at the moment I could not taste them so it would be close to criminal.

It is very strange when my sense of taste/smell switches off - I used to do taste testing for Allied Lyons, so it is fairly accute - and when it goes away it is most odd.

It does mean that I can eat packaged food though. I could eat the packet as well and not notice.

    Hey Anne,

There's a nasty combination of virus and strep going around - the virus exacerbates the coughing from strep. Get thee to a doctor to get tested for strep. If it is that they can give you antibiotics to make it go away and perhaps some lovely cough medicines or pills to stop the coughing.

Main point - strep is rampant this year. If you're coughing get the quick test to find out if you need to fight it.

That does not seem to be the answer. The immunities which can be measured do not predict for outcome. Immunity of course is useful to prevent the disease rather than deal with it after getting started. The deaths were for those who HAD the disease not the ones merely exposed to the bug and then did not go on to get sick.

    A couple of points:
The rapid strep is a screen and is not 100% sensitive, so you can miss it unless you do a culture as well.

The local incidence of strep is hugely variable and the assocoation may not be anywhere near true enough in your area.

Coughing is a good sign for a URI, flu, etc but not for strep which temds to produce high fever, sore throat headache and sometimes funny movements (tics).

I second all the recommendations about hydration. Drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest. Take it easy, and I am sure you will be back to normal in no time!

Still here - temperature down to almost normal but the coughing has begun with a vengence.

Throat is now not so dry but still feels slightly agrieved about things in general, head and eyes feel clearer, feet less like blocks of ice. I think I might live after all.

To cheer me up still further the sky is clear and the sun streaming in through the french windows, which is a bit of a novelty after all the cloud and rain.

We are requested to keep away from hospitals, health centres and anywhere there are lots of people if we think we have 'flu' - Swine 'flu' in particular, to limit the spread.

When I suggested a partial immunity I was thinking of the part that involved being dead - the rest of the symptoms being suffered. Apologies if that was not clear or is not logical.
