"Fanatical" is a bit harsh. Choosing to wear a kilt in casual/everyday situations is, IMHO, no different than choosing to wear pants. It's a preference thing. Most of the time I prefer the kilt to pants, so I'm out and about in a kilt a lot. When dealing with a sporran isn't practical I'll wear a UK. My fave is the Survival--heavy duty, pockets galore, and the most comfortable material of the standard UKs....
I also wear a kilt when performing (every show since I started wearing kilts), but I'm a guitar player. A couple of times before a show I've been asked, "Are you the bagpipe player?" "Aye, but tonight I'm rocking the guitar!"
