Interesting question right from the start. I knew my tartan from the start because of my family - vests, jackets, skirts - and when I saw a kilt for the first time I had a strong desire to wear one. Some decades later I learned that I could acquire one - where and how much to spend. I would not wear a suit but for the social necessity of my line of work. I do like to look smart however and it suits me to have and wear my kilt.

Though I am confined to the modern world of offices and courts here in Massachusetts I am happiest when I am out walking in the woods and fields. The kilt is sincerely, truly the most comfortable garment going - in all seasons. I recently read a book that talked about the proscription of wearing kilts and tartans in the end of the 18th century and one contemporary observer stated that it was a pity because the Scots had, in the kilt, the most useful garment for walking, climbing - even fording rivers.

As I have previously stated here I feel taller, better looking, healthier and more whole when I am wearing the kilt - more so in the mountains.

I can only say try it; you'll like it. Never look back. Though it is expensive to get a good one at the outset it will save you a lot on pants that you grow tired of.
