It is too big, with the most noticeable issue being the sleeve length. I think you're waistcoat and shirt idea would be fine for a family gathering.

In the long run, although you might make-do with this jacket, you'll feel better and look better in one that actually fits.

One thing I've found with UK sizes is that if it says it's a 44, it's probably more like a 42 North American. That said, I agree with what the others have said about the sleeve length; it's probably a major undertaking to shorten them. Still, what a bargain find while riding! Keep the rubber side down!

Beertigger has sent a PM suggesting a trade for his jacket, which is too small for him but might work for me. Hopefully the details line up and we solve both our problems... I'm just waiting to hear back from him now about the size and description of his jacket.

Too big and not worth altering. I am a 38, and find I have some 40 or larger jackets because it was near impossible to find one my size; they don't fit near as nicely as a 38 though (or sometimes even a 36 - they vary). Stores seem to begin at size 40. It's a real shame, and I sympathize because I have a lovely Lovat green tweed kilt jacket in size 36, and it's just a wee bit small. I think you should sell yours and not try wearing it. - perhaps you could sell it here?

You could scout eBay for a 36 and have it converted to a kilt jacket. It doesn't really have to be that color. I just bought a blue tweed, and am about to buy a blue blazer for conversion (which runs $50-70).

It looks just about fine to me. Atleast it's not drooping off you shoulders like larger jackets do on me.
I'd say keep it, wear it and get it slightly altered when you can afford it.

For all of those who posted the advice that the OP looked fine in a jacket three sizes too big, I have a rhetorical question: would you offer the same advice regarding shoes, or a dress shirt ("I have a 16" neck, but found this really cool looking dress shirt with a 19" collar. Does it look okay?"), or a kilt that didn't fit?

The OP got a really good deal on an Argyll jacket, and was given two pieces of sound advice: Sell it or swap it for one your size or put it away until you grow into it. They guy wants to look his best, not like six pounds of spuds in a ten pound sack. Was the advice to wear a jacket three sizes too big offered because no one wanted to risk offending the OP by saying, "Guy, the jacket is way too big?" Or do people expect their clothes to fit only where they touch, and don't know any better?

I had a blazer made into a kilt jacket for $70 at Thorncrest Plaza on Islington Ave. at Rathburn. Tailor is on 2nd floor by the CIBC. No harm in getting a price. He also lengthened a PV kilt and moved buckles for me.
