Alex,

This is a shot of the Appin Regiment, my 1745 Jacobite living history group. I'm normally marching with them but this year represented Clan Elliot in the parade.

Phil, carrying the Appin banner, and Peter, our piper, have trimmed their great kilts in yellow and red binding respectively. It is not fringe, but a strip of cloth covering the edge of the fabric.

In Richard Waitt's paintings from 1714 of the Laird of Grant's Champion, Alastair Grant Mor, and his Piper, William Cumming, both are wearing coloured trim on their great kilts. Phil and Peter liked the look and decided to use it. We're not sure what the significance is but believe it probably indicates they are part of the Laird's personal household. Phil is even trying to replicate the curved sword held by Alastair Grant Mor.

They are both wearing the tartan worn in the film Rob Rob with Liam Neesom. I have a tank made out of the same tartan from Heritage of Scotland that gets lots of compliments.
