I spoke too soon. Exactly the way I tie MY shoes. What people sometimes do not expect is that the loops of the bow knot align on a bow tie with one loop in front and one "end" (the straight part). Immediately behind the loop is the other end and behind the end is the other loop. (Each side of the bow has a loop and an end, but only one of each is visible from the front. ) While that looks fine, it confuses the person who may have been counting on two loops or two ends showing. Just as the difference between a square knot and a granny is in the alignment of the second half of the knot, the difference between a properly tied bow tie and one that seems to go vertical is that second half.

I understand bow-tied sashes follow this same rule.

In the UK, one sometimes sees a "single ended" bow tie with one straight end that tucks in under the collar. I do not know quite how they work, but the end result looks the same. Cary Grant wears one in The Grass is Greener.
Some take the high road and some take the low road. Who's in the gutter? MacLowlife
