It's been a cold two weeks here (-20 to -16 degrees Celsius even with the sun up, which means five hours a day), and at least one more week of the same is coming. I've yet to wear a kilt in these temperatures, but your comments make me braver. Maybe today I'll try. My wife's just finished a pair of woollen hose for me, and I'm anxious to try them on.

Well, Eskimos do wear pantz for sure, but they are also wise enough to wear long "kilt length" coats over their pantz...taking advantage of heat rising and being captured under the kilt length coat.

I'd say a good hat, gloves boots and hose are a must, also try to keep your core as warm as possible, it is do able this is winter 3 for me, here is a picture from last year, I took off my jacket and hat for the photo but I was very warm

As long as you wear plenty on top you will be all right and a heavy kilt and gloves help greatly I find it makes no difference whether you wear anything under kilt or not

I forget the exact percentage but I saw a statistic that you lose something like 50% of your body heat through your head.
I would have said the exact same thing 2 days ago, before I read this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/20...humanbehaviour
Strange, huh?? Actually, I want to say I got this link from a forum post but I can't remember which one now... Still, it would make sense that SOME majority of heat could be lost through your head, being that heat rises and your head is the highest point on the body (most of the time... ).
I guess the idea is that if you ARE bundling up, be sure to bundle your head too!

tis the season . . .
here is my example, Stillwater heavyweight blackwatch:
-9F, windchill somewhere around -15 or so. Reinforcing the previous comments.
Layers (I have regular poly hose with my smartwool on the outside)
wool when possible.
keep the core warm
In general, your kilt will be much warmer than dockers or jeans or the like. Now, a pair of woolen trews? well, I'd probably still go with the kilt.

I ran the test of canadian winters kilted, basically -20 with a -30 windchill and blowing snow...and frankly...brisk, a bit refreshing, but not cold. I was wearing a 16 oz kilt with an arfyll jacket, good thick hose... I wouldn't stay out forever but if moving around, just fine.....
you'd be surprised how warm wool can be.
