    Jacket Makeover

On Christmas morning, to my surprise, I opened a box and found a jacket that my wife redid to go with my Irish National kilt.

For a first time endeavor, she did pretty good in my opinion. The jacket was a thrift-store wool, which was in very good condition. She then proceeded to cut it to a Crail style. The buttons were had from somewhere in Ohio....heavy pewter with the Irish harp.

The jacket is simple but to the point. I'm considering having epaulettes put on, as she has plenty of material left over, and a few more buttons.

Unfortunately, she did not take pictures before, or during, the project started. All you get to see is the finished project!

It sounds like you have a fine woman there. Make sure you do something nice for her!

The jacket looks really good, and it will serve you well.

Agreed! Superb job...I will be attempting something similar in the near future I'd bet...after all...who needs to pay several hundred dollars for an Argyll jacket when we own sewing machines and there's so many thrift stores about!

Years ago I modified a Harris Tweed sportcoat from Goodwill into a tweed Day Jacket.

There was enough material from what I cut off to make pocket flaps, cuffs, and epaulettes. In retrospect kilt jackets don't need cuffs or epaulettes anyhow and I needn't have bothered.

The trick is to find a jacket which has "patch pockets" for the lower pockets at least, so that the underlying fabric of the jacket front panels is not perforated. That's because the lower pocket flaps on a kilt jacket are in a different location than they are on a suit jacket, at least on the jackets I was trying out.

She's done very, very well. Now you've got to keep her well supplied in jackets to modify!
