    Help!...tightening up a kilt?

I need some expert help here. I found a fantastic Isle of Skye kilt, 13 oz., 6 yds., but it's a 38". I normally take a 36". The seller, who happens to be a tailor, said he could move the buckles to make it a 36". Hmm....tempting! But, would it work? Would it look like it's the wrong size????

Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

If it's done properly (moving the apron edge buckles and the underapron strap), no one will notice. I've moved buckles as much as 4-5", and it's not noticeable. Whether it's worth it in this case depends on how much the person wants to sell you the kilt for. It's always better to have a kilt that actually fits your measurements.

And remember that it's not just the waist that matters - the hips matter, too. Before you spend very much money, you'd want to be sure that the kilt fits in the hips as well.

Moving the buckles and/or straps is the way to go. The viewer shouldn't be able to notice any irregularity. And that'll give you another excuse to sweet-talk the Mrs. into converting another jacket for you.

Barb, thanks for the great information. Since the kilt I want is at a bargin, and the seller is willing to redo the buckles, I guess I'll do the deal.

BTW, where in NY are you located? Anywhere near Albany?
