depending on how casual the event is, I have worn a rugby shirt with my kilt to good effect...

the final outfit:
First I was going for an all black outfit but I got this tie from a lady friend and really like it. So decided to wear it. I was probably a little overdressed, but being the only one in kilt I was standing out anyway. And I like to dress smart, wearing ties often on casual occasions.
Got lots of good response. And after the party I went to the student bar to meet my Rowing club. There 2 drunk female students tried to do the check but I put on a boxer because I new it would happen in a bar full of drunk students.
There more compliments. And some questions of really interested people. And of course some drunk students screaming I was wearing a skirt. But they shut up after seeing the female attention I was receiving.

The black and white tie is a nice contrast to all of the black (which looks good). The touch of white also draws the eye to your face. Of course, everyone will have looked at your kilt, first, but it's nice to leave them (particularly the ladies) knowing who the fine gentleman was who was wearing the kilt.
