"Hunting" hose
I have been perusing the hose threads recently and consequently a variety of online vendors regarding a personal kilt hose upgrade. I am intrigued with some of the options for diced/argyl cuffed hose.
I seem to remember a while back seeing a post or two regarding these as "hunting" hose, a field rather than a formal option. I guess my question to the learned (or opinionated ) rabble is.......... How formal are hose with specialty altered cuffs? -and- what are "hunting" hose?
Just curious.

I have a few pairs of Argyll top hose that I wear for daywear events. They are Kilt Hose not Shooting Socks. There really is little difference between the too but I think one is generally thicker than the other. I got my Argyll Tops through Redshanks Scotland. Redshanks is a member of the forum and I think could set you up with some, they are from The House of Cheviot and are still my favourite hose to wear on a daily basis. Here is his store
For evening, formal wear I wear diced or argyll hose.

They are called by various names, shooting sock, country hose or country socks, breek socks---by any name they are very similar to the various dressier kilt socks, many with fancy designs on the turnover part of the hose, others with contrasting turnovers, and still others with embroidered pheasants, etc...
Most are made by House of Cheviot/Hawick Hose but are available across a variety of vendors. Try Scotweb, but look up under countrty socks. Try STA under their fancy hose. A company called countrynaturals.co.uk also sells them. Not everybody sells every version made by Hawick so if you look around enough you should find the whole variety after some bit. I have two pairs of the argyll tops like MacMurdo has, as well as three pairs of other fancy tops, and they are heavyweight, well made, and generally attractive. Sometimes hard to get them in colors that will match modern kilt colors but not impossible.
Good luck. I will try to post some photos when I get home from work of the ones I have.

The House of Cheviot site is currently under construction and I will eagerly await its completion. I have also checked the other sites as well. Now to make up my mind.
Glen, great look! Just what I was looking for.
Can I assume that the more formal look goes to all-diced or all-argyl hose as opposed to the hunting sock look?

Here is a pic with me in one of the pairs I got from Scotweb a while back. They used to have a variety of sock body colors and sock turnover patterns on their website, but now it looks like Matt does at the STA giftshop site:
Me
Link to Matt's webpage with a whole lot of variety for you:

Will try to post more of mine later.

Check out these and be sure to scroll all the way down. Not cheap, but then, they are not cheap hose. I've always had very good products from House of Labhran.
