I was 16 in 1971 when I joined the local army reserve unit, and I was issued my first kilt. It was maybe three years later when I bought my first kilt for myself in my clan tartan.

57 for me...just this spring past and just before my birthday. I'd talked for years about getting a kilt, and when my younger brother got one I figured he shouldn't be the only one kilted at family functions.

I bought and wore my first kilt when I was 39 and at a Ren Faire. I had wanted one since I was about 11. We were on a family vacation in Winnipeg, Canada and I saw a fellow in kilt and plaid. He was the first man I had ever seen dressed like that. I talked to him for almost an hour until my Da finally said I needed to let the man go. I remember how nice the fellow was and polite no matter what I asked and I am sure some of my questions were beyond inane. I dont remember what all we talked about, but I still think about that fellow when I am with my Cub Scouts today. I hope he is well where ever he might be and I hope he is still kilted.

Did not get my first trousers until I was six. Ma kept me in a kilt and my sister in a skirt in matching MacNeil tartan. Easier at nappy changing time. My sister did the same with her two boys. Trousers were introduced at age five for them. Just plain easier to deal with. Always had a kilt, and wore it regularly. Only got flak for it in the early grades at school. I am 59 now.

I was either 8 or 10 ... it was a dance recital at school, and I was one of the ones who performed a Highland jig ...
I bought my first kilt at 28, and started wearing them pretty much full-time (outside of work) at 31.
It's been a comfortable five years.

About two years ago. I have always been intrigued by the kilt, but the only folks who I ever saw wearing one in my part of the world were either playing the bagpipes or American Revolution reinactors. My interest peaked when I took the Boy Scout's Woodbadge course. I now wear the kilt at least once a month to our Greensboro Kilt night and 3-4 times a year for special Scouting occasions. I'm planning to build my wardrobe to at least allow me to be kilted most of time when not at work. (And maybe when at work.)
