Traditional Garter Ties & Color Matching

Just when you think they've invented everything...

At my age (65) I've come to prefer the traditional garter ties as they are much more comfortable on my leg than elastic. Hardly ever wear elastic garter rigs anymore, seem too tight. Nothing horrible...just prefer the gentler touch of the traditional garter ties.

Certainly no consideration for a younger man...just us olde kilties...

Just realize you get four sets of flashes but only one set of garters, so if you want to change colors you have to remove one color from the garter and put the other on. No biggee, really, as I rarely (never) wear more than one set of flashes/garters at a time anyway.

Having read through the thread I realise that 'traditional' means different things to different people and that the replies all seem to refer to wrap around non-elasticated modern garters as opposed to the pre-c1800 Claddich stipped garters that were some 30+ x 1+ inches, wound around the calf and tied in a variety of bows and knots to finish.

It is possible to find cloth that would be suitable or one can find someone with a narrow loom and get them to weave up some material. I have a couple of pairs that I tie in a Saltire knot. Will try to post some pics. Would anyone be interested if I could get hold of a run of one or two traditional designs?

Just to clarify, I used the word "traditional" only because that is how the vendor - Scottish Tartans Museum - describes the product. Perhaps they take their description from the manufacturer. My use of the word traditional to describe these devices was never intented to be an accurate historic description, only used the words assigned by the manufacturer/vendor to describe the product I'm discussing. Focus of the thread was the look of a monochromatic color combination of kilt hose and flash....

I'm most impressed by how late I've been to figure it out - seems the smart looking gents are way ahead of me.

You are not late to the dance. We have been wearing them because that is what was sent with the hose, so was the hose maker's choice/taste that seems to be becoming de rigeur. You are no less smart or smart-looking than the rest of us. I doubt that I would have come up with the combo myself it it was not thrust upon me by the garter ties being included in the hose deal and happening to match the base color of the hose. Not without fashion sense myself, I still probably would not have thought of it.

We use the term "traditional" to distinguish these from the modern elastic garters that most people are familiar with. "Traditional" in this sense means they are of the old fashioned, tie it yourself variety. It's not meant to indicate that they are "historically correct" for any specific era, otherwise we'd have called them something like "historical 18th century garters" etc.
