Vintage Port?

I am very partial to port, but don't know very many other people in RL who are. One of my uncles back home used to be until he became teetotal for religious reasons.

I recently bought a Taylor Fladgate LBV '04, and my wife wanted to cook with it! Granted not the most expensive, but hardly for cooking with! After she explained she only wanted a tiny bit, I let her use some of it. I'm afraid I will have to drink the rest myself. Which direction I pass it to myself is academic.

Ironically, there is a domestic American port from NY state that is also called Taylor, but is quite awful IMHO. If there actually is any connection between the two then they should be ashamed. That's only fit for cooking, but apparently we had already used it all for that purpose.

I don't know any Americans in RL that drink port, but there must be some or they wouldn't sell it here.

It seems as if proper port glasses are not sold in the USA, which may explain WHY few American Gentlemen are acquainted with the pleasures of a glass of port (and a nibble of cheese) after dinner.

I'm have a few bottles of 2003 Grahams Vintage Port that I'd like to lay-down for 15 to 20 years. I've never tried to keep bottles for that length of time. Are there any suggestions that anyone could give me, other than don't open them.

Secondly, is a Grahams 2003 Vintage Port worth the effort?

Thanks for any help you may be able to give me.

Grahams '03 is most definitely worth looking after and would probably be better to drink it in 25 to 40 years time. To store, find a dark, cool, dry place where the temperature does not vary too much, lay the bottles on their sides with the labels upwards so that you do not disturb the bottles when you are wondering what they are in 20 years time and then anticipate!

He's a capital fellow, but he never passes the port.

I'm late getting in on this discussion. My good friend Steve and I are a bit Anglo- and Alba-philic, and a few years ago, after reading many Victorian and Georgian -setting novels where port featured, we decided to try it out. Being obsessive types, we did a great deal of research about all of the things Jock mentions.

We're educated enough in our pallets now that we prefer tawny to ruby for serious occasions, but neither of us really has the money to venture into vintage ports, just yet.

Of course, it has also occurred that we'll get a bottle of Warre's or Fronseca's Bin No. 27, and drink it from the bottle while playing video games on a night his wife and child are visiting the grandparents. 8)

Opened a bottle of my Dow 66 at Christmas. Yum! But needs drinking - it's heading overthe edge. What a shame - only 7 bottles left from my christening gift from my aunt.
