Xmarks variants?

I think that maybe some of your guys are taking the terms "weathered" and "ancient" too literally! (As to "weathered", anybody who has survived this latest bout of nasty winter weather qualifies as "weathered" in my book.)

Look back on the intricacies involved in the making and distribution of the last couple of runs of Xmarks tartan and you'll see that it is no small undertaking. It was, if I remember correctly, a sort of pre-order thing that had to meet a minimum yardage set by the mill and then the shipping and handling...

I really wasn't proposing that another run of tartan be started but, if it was, the economics would say that the tartan could not be restricted to any segment of the group...ya gotta make an sell enough to make it worth the effort, y'know. As I mentioned, the idea was sprung by the thread about leaving the clan tartans to those who have a direct connection to them and other tartans being worn by non-clan affiliated folks.

I like the muted...I also like the original! It's a fine tartan, and even though the colors are a little different, it doesn't change the meaning, it's still the same tartan.

Several like to refer to The Isle of Skye tartan as X-Marks Hunting

While I believe the original is a very fine tartan, I don't see why we shouldn't have variants. I enjoy some fine Hunting tartans, and personally wear the Caledonia in Ancient colours.

I'm not on board with the idea of reserving different variants to levels of membership or age though - we're all X-Markers here, we should all have the right to wear any x-Marks tartan.

I am truly sorry if Piper and I gave anyone the impression that alternative versions of the xmarks tartans should be restricted in any way, as we were merely having free form thought about whom the specific variants might be "appropriate" for in a "poke in the ribs" kind of way. Yes, tongue was firmly planted in the cheek for all those posts.

I do like the idea of ancient, muted and/or weathered options of the standard xmarks tartan, or the possibility of developing a second xmarks tartan in hunting colors. I would, however, leave those decisions up to the owner of the trademark for the tartan, who I believe is now Steve. I personally have not purchased xmarks tartan yet simply becasue there has only been one run made since I started getting into the forum, and that was the last PV run, which did not particularly interest me. Now heavyweight wool would be a different story altogether.

I have been having fun with this thread. I could see adding the posted hunting colours to my collection in the far future - they really look sharp. But for now, I will continue to wear XMarks Modern.

Yes, definitely yes. I've really been looking for an appropriate tartan in 'hunting' colors (and by that I mean something in earth tones). My state tartan already looks a lot like the X Marks modern in terms of the color scheme and I can't think of any other district/organization tartans that have any significance to me that are in the color range I'm looking for. Maybe a hunting tartan (or simply a weathered version of the original) would fit the bill. If we could get enough people on board for a mill run of 16-ounce wool, I'd definitely go in on it.
