    Hangover cure

We love to talk about drinks here, but what about when we've had one too many?

Here I am, at 11:45 in the morning in my hockey jersey/pajamas, with a massive hangover. Too much Gemütlichkeit last night, as we say in Wisconsin. So what do I do? Whey. Good old farmhouse whey. Packed with vitamins and nutrients, it'll cure what ails ya!

What do you guys use when there no hair of the dog to fix you?

Can't help you with post-drinking hangover repair, but do have a suggestion for end of the binge night ritual that will hopefully cut down on getting one the next day.

After a hard evening's work emptying liquor containers, before going to bed take two
aspirin (real aspirin, not tylenol or advil or anything else), drink two 12 oz glasses of preferably cool water, and eat several good sized sugar cookies (plain old granulated sugar---no need to get fancy). Although you will probably get up to pee in the middle of the night (unless you are passed out for good) you should awake in the morning (or afternoon) with less of a headache than you normally would have for the amount of drinking you have done the night before. Tried it after I learned the metabolic reasons why it works back in school (too technical to go into here) and have been a convert ever since.

    Ahhhhhhh....memories of my younger days...alas...
As time and experience have been excellent teachers and have molded this pupil into one who throughly enjoys the philosophy of moderation, said forehead-slamminng-jackhammer hangovers have gone the way of my abs and quick left jab. I digress.

I grew up a Michigan hay seed farm boy and found the best 'cure' for Mr. Barleycorn's revenge to be WORK. Anything that makes you sweat. Start with a hardy breakfast (even if its past noon) and get out and work it off.

Seems that this 'cure' is correct for many other ailments that have plagued me from physical issues to worry or concern. Burn it off, brother and have something to show for the effort.

A bit of the hair from the dog that bit me is what I do.

Seriously, I had a neighbor freshman year who would drop a couple aspirin into a huge glass of water and set it on his nightstand. He'd drink it when he'd lay down for bed, as ForrestModern has suggested

To keep my head from pounding the next morning I try to remember the 2 glasses of water and aspirin trick...of course, if I've had the sort of night that really requires that I might not think of it before passing out. But if my stomach is bothering me in the morning, I like to find something to coat it: mashed potatoes and a milkshake do fine.

I think you are onto something here. The reason for hangovers and headaches after a heavy night is strange enough that the body is dehydrated. I usually always drink so much water that I think I will drown, before I go to bed. I am generally pretty good the morning after.

Sadly, there's no hangover cure - despite the old folk remedies and the miracle cure commercials.

Alcohol is a poison and the liver converts it to acetaldehyde, another poison.

The liver can only break down the alcohol in one shot (or one beer) an hour. The more you drink, the more work the liver has to do.

Often, the liver has to "borrow" enzymes from other organs to help break down the alcohol. When that happens the toxins in the organs donating enzymes to the liver build up - since they're not being broken down - and cause that sickly hangover feeling.

Doctors say drinking more than four drinks in one sitting is binge drinking.

    Social drinkers don't get hangovers.

Any docs on board correct me if I'm wrong in what I've been taught.

Time seems the only answer to the pain of a hangover.

I think you're thinking of being drunk. There's no way for your body to filter the alcohol any faster, but a hangover is not being drunk. And even if there's no way to "cure" a hangover, there are still many ways to remove the symptoms. It's like cold medicine--NyQuil won't cure your cold, but it'll make you feel a helluva lot better!

I don't really think we need to bring this into the mix. Lectures are just not wanted or needed.

Dr. Seltzer's Hangover Helpers are primo. A huge dose of aspirin plus a huge dose of caffeine and a lot of water and you're good to go.

Sorry, don't mean to lecture - was only presenting scientific facts. Have worked hospital detox for many years and still work rural detox.

Withdrawal (hangover) is an expected part of the drinking experience for folks who drink a bit too much - or more.

The reason Nyquil works is its 25% alcohol - hair of the dog.

    I'll go away quietly now.
