Well done. A small suggestion however, which I hope will not offend. A black tie should be black, regardless of the colour of the coat and waistcoat. Coloured bowties generally work best with less formal attire-- I think a black tie, especially with your blue jacket and waistcoat, will look a bit more sophisticated.

Thanks for the kind comments, gents I find that I do like the way it looks... better than I would have thought in the past. I am a bit of a perfectionist for the "devil may care" attitude, but it'll grow on me

Yes, the PC and vest are navy, courtesy of Paul from this forum when his friend's shop was selling out their inventory. I have studs for the shirt, but didn't put them in for this trial run.

The tie looks great! Is the tartan Maclaine of Lochbuie Hunting Modern by any chance?

You did a fine job of tying that tie! It took me a while to do it within 2 minutes. I enjoy wearing them with regular business suits, now.

Thanks, Larry The tartan is Ferguson Modern.

MoR, definitely no offense taken! I was wondering about that, actually. Having never been to a black-tie event, I'm not entirely sure of formality levels. And in particular, I didn't know how a black tie would go with a navy vest. I was brought up that black + blue is somewhat of a fashion faux pas.

    I do have a black bow tie, but it's a pre-tied one!

Glad to see you wearing the navy PC so well! The bow-tie looks great... though I'd recommend a sporran with a shiney cantle to match its formality
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

How can you admit that in public!!! Actually a black tie can be worn with with any colour coat or doublet, or, for that matter, with a tartan coat, as well. No fashion faux pas, here.

I agree wholeheartedly, Paul. Right now, time and money are against me, so I'm not sure I'll get a formal sporran in time.

When I went out to buy a wing-tip shirt, the only one I could find came as part of a package... shirt, cumberbund, and that "bow tie". So I have one, but will likely never wear it. The very first time I tied the real one even not knowing what I was doing, it already looked better than the pre-tied one! So yeah... it's just sitting on my tie rack because I hate throwing things out
