The fireplace wouldn't've helped, anyway. The melting point of gold is 1337.33 K, 1064.18 °C, 1947.52 °F, which you're not going to reach in your house's fireplace.

And if by chance you do want to get rid of it, Kayak.com is offering a package deal for flight/hotel/and a volcano excursion to the Tongariro volcanic complex which includes Mount Ngauruhoe...I mean Mount Doom

I stuck with silver as I generally don't wear gold jewlery.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Silver has a lower melting point than gold... but you still can't melt it in your home fireplace!

Seriously! If those orks opened up a little cafe, they could clean up! You know, with all of those people going to destroy rings of power....

Ali, can you link where you got your ring?
And seriously, Frodo was just so lame near the end. But, it was pity that stayed my hand from hitting off on the remote control.

I always say: read the books, the pictures are better. [1]
I well recall the first time I saw a poster with Viggo Mortensen as Strider, in a young colleague's office. This was well in advance of FOTR's release, but my friend was following avidly.
Says I, Who's that? (cleverly deducing that it was from LOTR)
Strider.
What?!? That's never Strider!
Oh yeah...
Listen, pal. Aragorn is 180 years old, and he's been through the wars. This kid's too pretty by half.
[ with apologies to Ali, but really now ]
[1] I'm paraphrasing a young child quoted by Alistair Cooke, on the subject of radio dramatizations versus TV. The radio Aragorn was better than the film one, but at least the film had a good Bilbo! (further apologies to any non-geeks who are still reading)

So true!
I find my daughter is exhibiting the same symptoms or signs of avid reading, which is mispronouncing words. Said words are usually above her vocabulary level and rarely heard out loud, but she's using them in the right context. I'm so proud!
