    First sgian dubhs

    Good day,
For my nephews wedding on New Year's Eve, a number of us on both sides were kilted. My sister made 4 of them. Not to be outdone by a younger sibling, I had to make my own contribution. So into the shop I went and after 4 weekends and a few evenings I ended up with these. There are actually 7 but my brother-in-law had already been given his for Christmas.
The blades are 3/16 x 1" stainless from the Canadian Tire tool section, the handles (white birch) were a support piece for an 8' folding table, and the little crest are buttons that I found at a craft shop. I had to file the back of them down so they would lay flat for the epoxy to bite. The tang of the blade is inserted into a slot that is made the same way that one of the forum members used to make a jumpdrive sgian (thanks for that idea).
Overall length is 7". I also discovered during this process that anyone with a few basic tools can do this. An angle and bench grinder, several files (flat and round), orbital sander, and a old bandsaw should do the most of it. The polishing was done with a buffing wheel and compound. And that's about it.

Very nice! I love seeing hand-made pieces like that. And I'm sure those who wear them will appreciate them that much more over a store-bought item.

    Well done!

That is almost serial production, taking the number into account.
