Hugh Mercer Day!
Fredericksburg Scottish American Patriot Hugh Mercer’s birthday is tomorrow, Sunday January 17th. As I’ll be working tomorrow, I won’t be able to attend the festivities with the Scottish Society of Fredericksburg at Dr. Mercer’s Apothecary shop.
So taking advantage of a warm winter Saturday, I headed downtown. Here I am at the statue of Brigadier General Hugh Mercer of the Continental Army.
I am wearing my USA Kilts semi-trad in the Stewart Black tartan.

My next stop was the Apothecary shop that Mercer owned before the American War of Independence.
These charming ladies take one back in time to that period of the birth of our country.
There was a strong thriving community of Scots living in the Fredericksburg area during the colonial times. One included a man with the surname of Paul, whose brother John had a significant naval career but that’s another story.
I hope XMarkers in our area may be able to join in the festivities, tomorrow at the Apothecary shop.

Lovely photos Mael, though it's been a warm few days here it's still too cold for a USA Semi Trad, I've got one in the Black Stewart as well.

Glen, I can appreciate that in having one of the coldest winters in Virginia, I can remember. The last two days though have been balmy, not needing a sweater or coat during the day.

Ern, some great photos there!
You seem to be out and about often so I expect to see you back in Scotland asap!
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Nice photos, Ern. I used your post to give my youngest a quick history lesson.

Thanks for posting those great pics. Mercer is quite revered in these parts as the immigrant ancestor of Savannah's favorite son, Johnny Mercer.
