Ok, I catch your drift. Especially since some of the Scottish Regiments formed from actual clans.

As far as corporations using tartan I'm happy when it's used wisely - even in Lothian buses, as it's an endorsement - or at least a use of something Scottish! There's tartans for just about everything now anyway as well!

As far as my ancestry, I do not know my direct male line's name. Many would say I therefore should not wear the tartan related to the name carried over from my great grandmother (I don't at the moment anyway), and perhaps not wear any clan tartan at all. Even if I found the roots of what my "real" surname would have been, I really don't think I'd feel a connection at all.

Thanks for your opinion, Tom. What do you make of corporation tartans and would you wear one if you have a strong affiliation e.g. Kenneth being clergy, or if you were part of an orginisation with a tartan?

Corporation and any other tartans are fine if an individual wants to wear them?? I'm afraid they're just not for me!! My wife asked me to go along to get measured for a new kilt as a bithday present about five years ago, I assumed I was getting a new Cameron tartan (my own Clan) unfortunately she ordered the Paisley tartan (district) the town where we reside! I'm not a Buddie (native of Paisley) I'm a born and bred Glasgow man, the kilt has lain in my wardrobe since it arrived, stupid I know!! but for me its Clan or nothing!!

Fair enough. I'd certainly wear the Glasgow tartan, though, I'd rather if there was one for my specific burgh.
I'll always prioritise my Campbell kilt before others for several reasons but I do like to wear a variety of tartans, especially for casual wear.

I am only interested in wearing universal tartans or solid colors or camo patterns. It looks like that leaves me out of this poll completely. However it makes it easy to "know my tartan" doesn't it?

Tartans I wear are my surname, Malcolm; mother's Robertson; Great grandmother Gordon via Morris; and any fashion tartan I want.

Paul, I have an Irish National, Isle of Skye, and a MacDonagh, my surname, in the making. I do like many other clan tartans, but would I wear one? Sure! Why not! I especially like: Stewart Black, Royal Stewart, MacEuwin, and the list goes on.

Corporate tartans, well, haven't given much thought to that aspect of tartans. The military ones are cool. The USMC is fantastic.

I wear mostly Stewart tartans as I know we have blood ties to that on my mothers side. I also wear Black Thistle as my mothers maiden name was Thistle. Eventualy I would like to find more of the tartans I have a blood connection. My last name is Smith but I think its from the English but if I can find a link to the Smiths of Scotland then I will be quick to find a kilt in that tartan.

The clan tartans I wear are of my own clan. I won't wear the clan tartan of my Mom's maiden name, nor any of the other tartans in my bloodlines. Why not? I'm not a member of those clans, and I don't identify with them.
As far as corporate tartans do, I'd prefer that they be original, and not draw on clan tartans.
I do like the district tartan concept. It means I can have a few additional kilts, and I'm not as strict on myself with regional tartans as I am on clan tartans.
What anyone else chooses to wear is up to them, of course.

I voted that I would wear any tartan that I liked...

Unless there was a good reason not to.

Currently I have kilts in several fashion tartans, a BlackWatch kilt and a Gordon and Irish County Roscommon kilt in the making.

With the regimental tartans I love the weight and warmth of good 18oz cloth so I wear the military tartans. The County Roscommon is a fashion tartan to be most precise and My mother liked it and wanted us to be able to match, when out and about sometimes.

I hope to have a MacDonell of Keppoch kilt someday soon but the fabric is not too easy to obtain... and I am afraid I don't really like the MacDonald tartan...
