We here in the USA have what we call "white elephant" gifts. (What a strange name.)
On our street we have, at New Year, a "white elephant party" where everyone brings the Christmas gift they like the least. The gifts are all wrapped so no one can tell how awful they are.
Then everyone takes turns: You draw numbers to set the gift-choosing order. Then on your turn you pick out a gift from the pile and open it. But you have the choice of, instead, stealing the gift which someone before you has opened. It's "the devil you know vs the devil you don't" thing.
