I don't think it is a question at all of the Duke of Argyll "outranking" him. Sir Lachlan could have a hundred salmon buttons if he wanted to!
And, BTW, "Young Argyll" would be the Duke's son and heir, the Marquis of Lorne, for "Young" means the eldest son.

I thought of having salmon buttons made for a doublet but figured I'd be stepping on Duart's and Argyll's toes if we showed up at the Oban Ball together!
My coat of arms bears three salmon, compared to MacLean of Duart who bears only one, and the Duke of Argyll who has none! Of course in his case salmon is one of his badges and they are best seen on his standard, which bears a semee of salmon naiant Argent...six in number!
