    Pawn Stars

On this week's new "Pawn Stars" on History a man comes in with his grandfather's Scottish blades. The dirk turns out to be a reproduction, but the "dagger" is a real antique that grandpa brought back after the war. There are no kilts in sight and I don't even remember their saying the word, but there is a good layman's explanation of the style and use of the sgian and why certain parts look the way they do.

Did they try to rip him off? I understand it's a business, but WOW they sure undercut the market on that show. I do enjoy watching it though, it is one of my guilty pleasures.

They kept calling the smaller blade a "dagger". They never used the words sgian dubh. A great educational moment lost. But the explanation of why it was shaped the way it is was good I agree.

I enjoy the show often as well. I can't believe the low offers that they make, and that many people accept them. Certainly a leason to be learned there.

The sgian dubh was a nice one. I'm a little surprised that the expert believed the cairngorm was replaced or added at a later date.

Saw the re-run of that last night. Their "military knife expert" was good on the hallmarks, but otherwise sounded like he was MSU. (Making "stuff" Up) I'm pretty sure the sgian dubh's owner made out pretty well though.
What always gets me about that show, the 'expert' will look at someones junk and say, "Yeah, this would go for $15,000 at an auction", which is most likely what the pawn shop is gonna do with it. Me, at that point I would say "thanks", hit the door, and google up junk auction! But then the pawn guy offers them like 4 or 5 grand and they go for it!

But, you gotta remember, they are in Vegas, most of their customers are degenerate gamblers and addicts. They need the cash now.

On the same show they paid some guy $1500 for a trashed 70's "Indian Mini Bike" (actually a rebadged import minicycle made by ItalJet in Tiawian) , and then sank another couple grand in restoring it. Those little bikes go for less than $2000 in mint condition, so the the owner and the mechanic were the winners on that one! But the pawn guys will have a nice overpriced decoration for their shop!

The episode that showed the grandson buying a hot-air balloon was a hoot.

That was a good one... I hate to admit it, but this show is definitely one of my guilty pleasures...

I finally saw the one with the "Scottish daggers" and if I remember correctly, the guy got around $400 bucks for the sgian dubh... I wonder how much those guys get paid for doing the show in their store. I bet the publicity is great for business!

I've never seen a pawn store around here as crowded as theirs is. This show is on many peoples guilty pleasures list.
