Yikes....I bought the kilt bell from Michael from Amerikilt. Now I'll be going "thumpity, thumpity, thumpity...jingle, jingle, jingle"!

Right on the mark, Greg. The sound is produced by some relatively hard part of the tassels striking the stiff front of the sporran, which responds like a drum head. Softening the tassel or the sporran front or putting padding between them will reduce the noise. If the sporran front is stiff leather, as many are, mink oil or neatsfoot oil will soften it.

One of mine has leather tassels, and it still thumps. I put a drop of hot melt glue under each. Problem solved.

My daywear sporran has no tassles but I still get a thump thump from the coins mobile phone and wallet in the sporran. I think it is all part of wearing the kilt. The more that you wear it the less you will notice these little noises.

Haven't you all figured out WHY the tassles are there? The drumming is to let people know that a REAL man is approaching.

I had one whose thumping was really loud! Like a Clydesdale coming down the sidewalk. I ended up cutting the leather tassels off.
Later I regretted it and attached regular cloth tassels, the kind that you can get at a fabric store, through the same holes with tiny key ring type things to keep them from falling off. Result!
Quiet tassels that you can swap out for almost any colour you want!
Now I'm working on figuring out how to get them to swing around in opposite directions at the same time...
... Oooh, I'm about as much fun as a rack of ribs at a PETA picnic!
