I go for ignoring most people who ask that question.

It all depends on the situation and how the question is asked.
What's under the kilt? Socks and shoes!
What's worn under the kilt? Nothings worn under the kilt it's all in perfect working order!
Now if your in a bar and a bloke asks. Your (wifes/girlfriends) lipstick. but you may need to to have more mates around than he does

of course you can always answer on a good night two shades of lipstick.

All depends on the situation and how I'm feeling

I always think it's weird when guys ask. I usually ask them back, "Why would you want to know?"

I've been saying, "what's under there is strictly between me and my wife" but I like your answer better!

If I get annoyed, I'll pull out one of my hearing aids and say, "What was that again?" and look very sternly into the eyes of the offending person. They rarely ask twice,

Thanks, I'll have to remember that.
When I'm asked, it's always: "Are you wearing underwear?" or some variant. Seems like there isn't as much leeway for creative responses.

The other comment I get is "You're wearing a kilt." I try to reply with something cordial: "Why, yes, I am." or "Thanks for noticing." Then, the person who initiated the conversation clams up. It's as though they only wanted to blurt out the obvious then be left alone. I'm always flummoxed. Personally, I wouldn't say anything at all if I didn't intend to converse for a moment.

That's what I usually get as well. Typically it's worded as, "you're wearing underwear under it, right?" It is posed as a yes or no question, which makes it hard to proffer a witty reply.

My favorite one of these was a guy who had been within six feet of me for an hour and a half; when I ran into him away from my op station he said "Dude, you're wearing a kilt," as though I might not have noticed either.

Don't you just hate it when you go out into public, and do not notice that you are wearing a kilt!
