So, if you ask for the askers ("is it cold?") hands, have any freely offered? How have you responded?

The last time I responded with "Are your hands warm?" she looked at her male companion who said "you're on your own" but she didn't take the bait.

The needed witty reply might be as simple as a bemused stare without saying anything. Then they get flustered and mumble something and look away.

The other comment I get is "You're wearing a kilt."
This I've gotten exactly twice. Once my response was "Really?" along with as surprised a look as I could muster; the other time, without even look back at the person - a colleague at the university of whom I am not especially fond - I just said "No, it's a skirt."

I might have to use that one. If someone asked if I were wearing underwear, I'd probably respond, "how is that any of your business", and walk away.

Wow. People actually say "you're wearing a kilt". Wow - I didn't know.

Various answers... and a little story

My reply depends on the situation.

First, if there a slight bit of "smart-***" intended, I will just stare and turn away. Actually this is rather rare.

Often, I will answer, "Only those I invite know for sure."

There are times when a guy will ask why I wear such. I paraphrase someone from the the Utilikilt site: The three C's: Comfort, controversy and chicks.

When I am with my wife, and the questioner is a couple, I will raise my wife's hand: "You'll have to ask her, it is her fetish, after all." That gets a big laugh from the girl.

But overall, I can only recall once or twice (if I am acknowledged) of someone not sounding a bit in awe of my Kilt. In fact, the first time I wore it in public (other than in a pub) we were with my wife's sister and family, and we were heading for a day in St. Augustine. But first, to my slight consternation, we had to stop by their church, to check on the progress of the Yard-sale that was being held. Oh, well, I said to myself, as I thought of the Church Ladies staring at me: just be cool...

To my great amusement, my wife kept whispering for me to look at all the ladies behind their tables giving me the raised eyebrow, one corner of the mouth curved, really interested look. And in that hour at least 5 women came up to me and complimented me on my look.

That day gave a real boost in confidence, and I have not been concerned since.

Hmmm... Maybe I should just start telling people the answer they really, secretly want to hear....

"My wife's lacy, black thong..." (With a deadpan expression, of course). That would likely kill any further comments and questions right there.... hehehe
